Thyroid disorders and Homeopathy

Thyroid gland

The thyroid gland located in front of the neck produces 2 important hormones, T3 and T4 which are essential for life. Their production in turn is dependent on having adequate levels of another hormone released from the brain called TSH. Thyroid hormones are needed for the normal brain development in the newborn. They are also needed for normal growth and development of the body tissues and play a very important role in maintaining body metabolism. The blood levels of these hormones are measured to determine how well your thyroid gland is functioning.

Multiple thyroid disorders can occur when there is a dysfunction in the hormonal production or if there are any intrinsic problems like inflammation of the thyroid gland itself. Common problems are Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Less common are Thyroid cancers, Subacute thyroiditis etc.

Hypothyroidism– Occurs when there is a deficiency of thyroid hormones. Typical symptoms are lethargy, dullness, weight gain, personality changes, constipation, intolerance to cold, dry skin, and menstrual irregularities in women.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis– Is a chronic auto immune disease of the thyroid gland. It occurs when the immune system starts to attack the thyroid gland and produces antibodies against one’s own tissues. It is more prevalent in women and is known to be a common cause of hypothyroidism (develops symptoms of hypothyroidism). There is usually a painless swelling or lump which may be noticed in front of the throat where the thyroid is located.

Hyperthyroidism– Occurs when the serum levels of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 are elevated. Symptoms usually experienced in this condition are weight loss, increased heart rate, palpitations, tremors, fatigue, swelling in front of the neck of the thyroid gland etc.

I have seen Homeopathy work wonderfully for thyroid disorders, if classical Homeopathy is employed. Classical Homeopathy is where the treatment is individualized for the person rather than having one treatment for all. Once the right remedy is selected for you, the remedy works by stimulating your own body to heal itself. The body when stimulated in the right direction is capable of normalizing the levels of the hormones. Usually you first start to notice improvement in your symptoms and sense of well being before there are positive changes in your thyroid function test reports. In the Homeopathic approach we believe and have seen that many physical diseases are a result of mental and emotional imbalances which are caused by life stresses; our remedies also help to heal at the mental and emotional levels. Our treatment is non- invasive, non-toxic, and the effects are long lasting in such chronic conditions.
