The top layer of the skin consists of dead cells which are constantly shed off and replaced by newer cells from the lower portions, which move upwards to the outer layers of the skin. This complete cycle of skin production, replacement and renewal takes about 4-6 weeks. In psoriasis, a common skin disorder of unknown cause, this life cycle of the skin cells is accelerated and that causes the cells to accumulate and build up on the skin surface. This causes red, dandruff like, scaly plaques which are sometimes itchy on the skin. The disease is recurrent and chronic with some patients suffering for decades. Some people also develop ‘psoriatic arthritis’ where the joints are affected and become painful and deformed.
